Catherine (Kay) Marie Kuzma October 10, 1933 – January 27, 2025 Catherine (Kay) Marie Kuzma, age 91, passed away on January 27, 2025, in Florida, surrounded by family. She was born on October 10, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Joseph Levi McCann and Dora Veronica Stoney, who both emigrated from Scotland in the late 1920s. Her parents met at an Irish dance, and their love story led them to marry at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh, where they settled to raise their family. Kay grew up in a close-knit family, with her older sister Sarah Getrude and younger brother Jack. The McCann family lived in Clairton, Pennsylvania, where Kay attended both grade school and high school. As a young woman, she continued her education at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, initially studying music and education. However, she soon realized that her true passion was in teaching, and she made the decision to focus her studies on education, a path that would define her life’s work. It was at Duquesne that Kay met Henry (Hank) Kuzma, the basketball coach at the College of Steubenville. Their love story blossomed, and they married soon after. Following their marriage, Kay transferred to the College of Steubenville and graduated in 1955. Together, Kay and Hank began their family, having four children: Hank (born 1955), Chuck (1956), Jim (1961), and Mary (1962). As a family, they moved numerous times due to Hank’s coaching career, with Kay supporting her husband while establishing roots in various communities. Throughout her life, Kay was a dedicated educator. Her teaching career spanned nearly 40 years, during which she taught elementary school students in a variety of locations, including Steubenville, OH; New Orleans, LA; Canonsburg, PA; Western Beaver, PA; Palmyra, PA; and Hancock County, WV. Though the family moved frequently, Kay’s love of teaching remained constant, and she was a beloved teacher wherever she went. Kay received many awards and accolades over the years for her dedication to her students, but she found her greatest joy in the enduring relationships she built with her former students, fellow teachers, and parents. She would often reminisce fondly about the impact her work had on the children she taught, some of whom remained lifelong friends. Kay’s commitment to her faith and values was another central aspect of her life. She was an active member of the pro-life movement, serving on the boards of Upper Ohio Right to Life and Human Life, as well as being involved with the Carriage House. She and Hank were also very involved with the TOR Friars and Franciscan University, which they considered a tremendous blessing and an important part of their lives. Kay’s faith, coupled with her love for family, was the foundation of her strength and resilience, and she made it a priority to instill these same values in her children and grandchildren. In her later years, Kay found immense joy in spending time with her growing family. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to travel to visit them and often expressed how much joy it brought her to share life’s special moments with them. Whether it was a birthday, a graduation, or a simple family gathering, Kay’s presence was always a source of love, warmth, and laughter. Her family will remember her as a gentle, loving, and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose unwavering support and caring nature touched all who knew her. Kay is survived by her four children: Hank (wife Roberta), Chuck (wife Lisa), Mary (husband David), and Jim’s wife Karen. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and two great step-grandchildren, all of whom were a constant source of joy and pride in her life. Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hank in 2014 and Jim in 2021, She will now be reunited with Hank and laid to rest together at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Steubenville, OH. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all who supported and loved Kay throughout her life. She will be remembered for her faith, her devotion to her family, her remarkable career as a teacher, and her steadfast commitment to making the world a better place through her actions and the relationships she built along the way. Kay’s legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
